"Much good has come of your words and actions since, Colonel." He reached out and set a hand calmly on the man's shoulder, that smile that was limited to his eyes seemed to grow just a little more. "I have seen to it, and continue to do so to this day. I've had many teachers in my life, but know you were one of the first. I do not forget those who cross my path, whether they enrich my life or intend to take it. The day I acquired my own fledglings, I gained a greater appreciation for how fortunate I was that night." He removed the hand, setting it on top of his cane as he looked out at the view. "And I thank you for sparing the life of that lost boy, and giving him the chance to learn."
